Selecting the perfect dog for you and your family can be challenging. For example, we adopted a Pug mix two years ago from the pound. He is an adorable, friendly guy, with a mellow disposition, and he is a wonderful companion. Before we got him, however, we had a purebred Maltese that we could not stand. The Maltese was high maintenance, a real yelper, and always needed attention. He also nipped at the kids. We finally had to give him away.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not telling you not to get a Maltese. Maltese are beautiful dogs that can be fine companions. I personally know many people who are very happy with their Maltese. The particular Maltese we got, however, just was not right for our family. We initially bought him at a pet store because he was cute and my daughter really wanted a big white fur ball as a pet. But he turned out to be a snooty, demanding dog that refused to obey commands and barked incessantly when left alone. That did not go well in my home.
It goes without saying that you should not acquire a dog just because it is cute or matches the color of your purse. Compatibility with your personality and lifestyle is very important. Some breeds may be more intelligent than others - an attribute you will definitely come to appreciate if you intend to train your dog. In addition, if a member of your family has allergies to dogs, consider getting a breed that does not shed, or get a different type of pet altogether. Also consider the background of the dog and the reputation of the breeder to ensure you are getting a mentally and physically healthy dog. Before adopting a dog, remember that it requires a commitment that should not be taken lightly.
